Flattops first day of the season

Ignore the wrong date on the photo. This was actually taken on November 5th, 2008.
There was about a foot of snow just past Heart lake and it made for some decent kiting. The wind felt quite stable at 5-15mph despite the storm coming in from the North. There was no base so my board took quite a beating. The Flat Tops should be ready for something other than a rock board in a week or two. Until then keep praying for snow.

Nice to see! Can’t wait until the snowpack sets in a little more. I was up on the Grand Mesa this last weekend scouting locations. It didn’t have as much snow on top as in your photo, but there have been at least two storms since then. It will be time to kite, soon!
I was up there camping last night and kited today. There’s not much more snow but it is starting to harden up a little. Diamond Dave and I will be heading up there tomorrow with hopes of more wind than today. I should get some good video tomorrow with the helmet cam.
Ps, I can’t wait any longer… It’s time to kite now…
Ok, I just got back and it was sick. The wind was up and down but very ridable at 6-18(Dave had his wind meter). I think we are going to wait for the next few big dumps b4 we head back up there. Probably next week end.
Aight, I was up there last weekend and there was no new snow. The good thing is that the snow is not melting just hardening up to make for a good base. I got a little riding in… The wind was better than last week at 15-20 and made for a few good jumps. I got my helmet cam figured out and got a few photos that turned out great. As long as there is snow I’m gona be kiting!
that same weekend i was driving back up to school and i was scoping out some fields near rabbit ears pass. im gonna try to kite them tomorrow on my way back to junction. at the same time as that pic was taken on flat tops these fields looked way deeper and way more clear as far as obstacles. more reviews later but the fields look to be depending on where exactly you go to be roughly the same size as the ones up on the grand mesa that are easily accesable from the road
Sounds sweet… I’ll have to check out that spot.
The flattops have been flooded with powder. I went up to Crane Park last weekend and the pow was six feet deep on the road in places.
no such snow on the road for my trip up to rabbit ears again yesterday clear roads all the way. descent powder (slightly crusty on top in spots) mostly untracked field (a couple snowmobile tread marks) that area has alot of potential theres two parking areas that access two different fields i descided to kite the east field because the western one has powerlines running parallel to the road about 50ft from the road but a much larger field. 14mph winds on the 12m made for smiles all afternoon. if your in the steamboat area and feeling like a bit of kiting, this spot is definitely worth checking out (parking lots for the east field are right at the continental divide sign at the summit of the pass. the west fields parking lots are roughly a quarter mile west of the continental divide sign). Happy Kiting.
