Tug Hill Event Wrap-up
After weeks of very long days working on the next issue, there are few things better than finding your inbox filled with some great snowkiting photos (except maybe taking them). Today I was greeted with an amazing collection from upstate New York and the Tug Hill event. Jan Brabant was inspirational in getting the event together for its second year and was rewarded with a great turnout and some spectacular conditions.
The weather smiled on the event bringing six feet of snow to the Tug Hill event site during the week preceding the event and cold conditions helped keep the snow in great shape. Snowkiters from around the region converged on the rolling pastures of the area for the two day event.
Wind was light on the first day with blue skies, with 40 kites in the air playing in the sky above the deep stuff. Kiters from Boston, New York City, New Jersey and New Hampshire had an amazing time thanks to the hard work of Jan Brabant of TI Adventures and Bob Diehl, the Lewis County Trail Coordinator. It is exciting to see country government embrace the sport of snowkiting and we should see some great things from forward-thinking Lewis County.
Sunday’s weather stepped it up a notch and riders like Zebulon Jacob, a Team Ozone kiter and snowkiting instructor from the Mount Washington area, showed the full potential of the area. Zebulon ripped through the powder and killed some great tricks in the sky above the Deer Creek Ranch. As the day wrapped up, the wind settled down and a few riders got to play in the Honeyville section finding untracked powder, a memorable session and some lifetime memories.
Special thanks to Charles Zeager and Ken of the Deer Creek Ranch for their hard work clearing snow, assisting kiters with their amazing Hagglunda BV206 tracked snowcat and for their warm garage that served as the cafeteria. Additionally, the event was a success in part to Ozone Kites, Lewis County, Jan Brabant and everyone who came out to kite or just watch! A special thanks goes out to Jackie Pitts for her tireless organization and work making everything come together smoothly. If you are interested in kiting at Tug Hill, check out the information available online including where to stay.
