Kite Lab: Ozone C4

Overview:

The new Ozone C4 is one of the best kite designs in the world to date. It has a beautiful feel for riding downwind making free unpowered turns, and when you decide to edge against it, the pop is very predictable. Its range is huge, and compared to other similar designs its wind range is revolutionary. The safety system works perfect and it’s there for you when you need it. In my area (Jackson, Wy) I cover the range with a 9m and a 13m.

It’s a C-kite which basically means that the leading edge is less aerodynamic causing the kite to be pushed back from the edge of the power zone. This is an advantage in many situations. For example when you unhook from your harness, it will sit at an appropriate place in the “window” to give you a good feel of pull without stall. Other non C designs tend to fly forward or stall backwards when you unhook requiring a fine trim on the depower cleat. The C4 will drift down wind with you ready for you when you need some power, but floating lightly while you let gravity do the job.

It turns sharp and evenly throughout and entire loop giving you great mountain climbing and predictable landings from flights. I ride my 9m in winds from 25mph to 35mph. I ride my 13m from 13mph to 27mph. Two kites cover most of the conditions for me.

The new valve is a snowkiter’s dream with a fast easy feel when pumping to pressure. You can leave your gloves on for the entire process working with the pump and valve and save your fingers some frost bite.

The Bar is simple and smoothe. It’s evolved from the last season loosing the pull tabs for a knot adjustment which helps with mismatched steering lines from the slipping buckle. The megatron chickenloop is still rolling as one of the best in the industry.

The relaunch on this guy works beautifully in water and snow. You simply turn it off the water or snow. In just the same way It’s my favorite kite to self launch off an anchor since it sits back in the window and resists falling forward or stalling back. The ability for the C4 to smash full power into the water and relaunch clean is better than any kite I’ve ever flown before. This is allowing us to push our “wakestyle” riding like never before.

Just what’s in order for getting wakestyle riding on big mountain terrain…

Ratings

Durability [rating:5/5]

The durability of the C4 is impressive and far improved over their past kites. Not just the highest quality materials, but the design itself lends to its strength. I’ve tomahawked my C4 too many times to count and it pulls off the water perfect everytime!

Function [rating:5/5]

The bar throw, and pressure are my favorite to date. The depower is simple, clean and works great. The chicken loop is clean and easy to reload after a release.

Quality [rating:5/5]

Ozone is the only company I truly trust, from kite to lines to bar to chicken loop… They know about quality.

Appearance [rating:5/5]

It’s beautiful from the wingtip graphics to the foam inlays on the bar. It looks expensive.

Packaging/Environmental Responsibility [rating:4/5]

It’s hard to give a 5/5 rating so… there’s a little plastic bag and a couple hang tags… but still the best kite bags on the market, and I love the stuff sacks!

The Big Horn Mountains! Wyoming, USA Update…Nov 7, 2011

November in the big horns from wayne phillips on Vimeo.

The Big Horns are one of only a few snowkite areas anywhere right now with snow, and arguably one of the best in the world any time. I thought it worthy of an update with some pictures to help get snowkiter’s stoke on for the 2012 season.[mappress mapid="4"]

We headed out of Jackson at 5am on Sunday.  Wayne drove while Billy and I drifted in and out of sleep the entire drive.  When we pulled up it was 9m wind and there were some locals there already cruising around and a bunch from Bozeman just leaving. It was strong wind and hard to get out of the truck at first, but seeing everyone out there shredding was really encouraging.

That night the wind continued 9m for me, but Billy and Wayne were on 13’s overpowered.  We weren’t able to tackle any hard lines or flights that night with the turbulent strong winds.  Plus the ridge tops were too strong to navigate safely keeping us at the base most of the time.

The next day was perfect 13m Edge and C4…climbing, gliding, tackling some lines with great lighting.  I caught this great sequence of Wayne’s line Down the South Face of Mount Baldy.  He works his way upwind on the top and drops the cross/downwind slope.  He uses his speed and line to keep the kite flying all the way back out the flats to catch the wind again. At the tops he triggers this cool slide as he drops into his line and I caught that too.
