The Big Horn Mountains! Wyoming, USA Update…Nov 7, 2011

The Big Horns are one of only a few snowkite areas anywhere right now with snow, and arguably one of the best in the world any time. I thought it worthy of an update with some pictures to help get snowkiter’s stoke on for the 2012 season.

We headed out of Jackson at 5am on Sunday.  Wayne drove while Billy and I drifted in and out of sleep the entire drive.  When we pulled up it was 9m wind and there were some locals there already cruising around and a bunch from Bozeman just leaving. It was strong wind and hard to get out of the truck at first, but seeing everyone out there shredding was really encouraging.

That night the wind continued 9m for me, but Billy and Wayne were on 13’s overpowered.  We weren’t able to tackle any hard lines or flights that night with the turbulent strong winds.  Plus the ridge tops were too strong to navigate safely keeping us at the base most of the time.

The next day was perfect 13m Edge and C4…climbing, gliding, tackling some lines with great lighting.  I caught this great sequence of Wayne’s line Down the South Face of Mount Baldy.  He works his way upwind on the top and drops the cross/downwind slope.  He uses his speed and line to keep the kite flying all the way back out the flats to catch the wind again. At the tops he triggers this cool slide as he drops into his line and I caught that too.
